Personal Safety (Return to)

In Your Home

  • Adequate locks on doors and windows are the first requirement.
  • Ensure that there is good lighting at all entrances to your house or apartment building. Have your keys ready before you get to the door.
  • Don't open your door to strangers. If you have an unexpected service person, check identification, and call the company. If the person at the door needs to make an urgent call, call the number yourself without admitting them into your home.
  • When answering the telephone, do not give identifying information to the caller, or reveal you are alone.
  • If a person in an elevator makes you feel uncomfortable DO NOT GET IN.
  • Use your initial rather than your first name in the phone book, and on your mailbox.
  • When entering your apartment do not let someone you do not know enter with you.
  • Do not open for someone buzzing your apartment if the person is not known to you.
  • In the evening and when you are out, leave on a few lights, and turn on a radio or television to make it appear as if someone is home.
  • If moving into a new home, change the door locks.
