Male Survivors

Most males who have been sexually abused, are abused as children or as teenagers; however, males can also be assaulted as adults. It is recognized that while many of the same issues face male and female survivors, there are variations within those issues for males. Some of these issues are: limited or non-existent treatment programs; lack of acceptance of the fact that such abuse happens; prejudice; homophobia and labeling.

Every victim of sexual violence, male or female, has individual responses to the attack, but there are some commonalities most experience. There is a tendency for victims to blame themselves for the abuse, feeling they should have been able to fight back or prevent it. Victims often feel guilt and shame and may fear what others think. You may develop a fear of people, or a loss of trust of those around you. You may experience difficulties with your relationships. All of these are normal reactions and can be dealt with - with help. It is important you realize that under no circumstances was the abuse your fault - nothing you said or did justifies such abuse. The offender is always to blame.
