Where to Get Help (return to)

Legal

Victims of dating/domestic violence can get help from the police and, later, the courts. If you require more information on these please refer to Legal Information. However, these are not the only places that victims may want to access for assistance. After you have contacted the police and made an initial report of the crime, you will be contacted by Victim's Services within about a month. Victim's Services follows up with victims of crimes and provides support and assistance to them.

As well, with domestic violence situations that are ongoing or very physically abusive a Domestic Violence Follow Up Team may become involved. These teams consist of a police officer and a social worker, and there are 5 such teams in Edmonton. These teams work with both the victim and the offender, separately, to try and find solutions for both parties.

Another program that may be helpful to survivors who are going to court is the Victims' Assistance Program run by the Edmonton John Howard Society. This program provides information and support to victims and witnesses of crime going through the criminal court process. You can call 422-0721 to get more information or to get help through the courts.
