Getting to Safety

For women wanting to leave an abusive relationship there are some safety options. No matter what form of abuse you are being subjected to - physical, emotional, sexual, financial or spiritual - there are options to make yourself safer.

The first option is calling the police. The police will come investigate and lay a charge if they feel it is warranted. If a charge is laid there will most likely be conditions placed on the offender to not have any contact with you. Making contact will result in another criminal charge being laid against them.

Another option is to go to a local women's shelter. There are three women's shelters in the Edmonton area that provide support, crisis intervention and shelter to women leaving abusive relationships. All three allow women with children - and two take women without children. They are places where women can go to be safe and decide how they will proceed upon leaving the shelter.

All the shelters - Lurana Shelter, Safe Place and WIN House - are listed in the phone book if you would like to access their services.

A third option that women leaving abusive relationships may use is to get a restraining order against their former partner. This is a legal document mandating their former partner to stay away from them or be criminally charged. To find out more about this option call P.R.O.P. (Protection and Restraining Order Project) at 423-8920.
