Where to Get Help (return to)

Medical

It is extremely important that your child receives medical attention as soon as you know of the abuse (or suspected abuse). Your pediatrician may be of help to you in determining if anything has happened to your child. Even if there are no visible signs or injury, there may be internal injuries, infection, sexually transmitted diseases, or pregnancy (depending on the age of your child).

Legal

You can get legal assistance from the police and, later, the courts. If you require more information on these, please refer to Legal Information.

Counselling

Counselling can help with the emotional aftermath of sexual abuse for both you and your child. There are many individuals and agencies that offer counselling in Edmonton and the surrounding area. Most will require you to have reported that abuse to Child Welfare before they will begin counselling. In some instances they will see both the child and the non-offending parent, and in other instances you will get completely separate counselling. The cost ranges from free, to what you can afford, to private counsellor rates. To find out what option will work best for you - you can call our crisis line (423-4121) and ask for referrals.
